System Design & Consultation

The engineering that happens before anyone touches a roof: load analysis, shading and output modelling, inverter and export strategy, and the network paperwork that decides what you are allowed to install.

System design is where a solar investment is either made or quietly lost. Most underperforming systems in Australia were not badly installed, they were badly specified: sized to a roof instead of a load profile, or quoted before anyone checked what the local network would actually approve.

What the design work covers

  • Load profile analysis. Interval data, where the meter provides it, shows when you actually consume power rather than how much you consume in a quarter.
  • Shading and yield modelling. Output is modelled per string across the year, so a winter-afternoon shadow does not become a surprise.
  • Inverter and string strategy. Panel-level optimisation or microinverters are specified where the roof justifies the cost, and skipped where it would not earn it back.
  • Export limits and network approval. Distributors differ on what they permit, and an export limit changes the economics of the design.
  • Battery and EV readiness. If storage or charging is coming later, the design accommodates it now instead of forcing a second switchboard upgrade.

Standards this work is measured against

Designs are prepared against AS/NZS 5033 for array installation and safety, AS/NZS 4777.1 and 4777.2 for inverter and grid connection requirements, and AS/NZS 5139 where battery storage is included. Design accreditation, like installer accreditation, is administered by Solar Accreditation Australia and belongs to the individual designer rather than to a company.

Consultation without a sales agenda

A design consultation can conclude that a smaller system is the right answer, or that a battery does not pay back on your usage, or that your switchboard needs attention before anything else happens. Those are legitimate outcomes and we will say so.

Common questions

Because they are usually solving different problems. One quote may be sized to fill the available roof, another to match your actual consumption, and a third to fit under a network export limit. Comparing them on price alone hides the fact that they are not the same system.
An export limit is the maximum amount of power your distributor will allow your system to push back into the grid. Because it caps the value of everything you generate beyond your own use, it directly changes the optimal system size and whether storage makes sense.
Not necessarily. Accredited designers can sit inside the installing business. The point is that the design is genuinely modelled against your load and your network conditions, and that you can see the reasoning, rather than receiving a system size with no working.
Yes, and it is considerably cheaper to allow for it at design stage. Inverter selection, switchboard capacity and cable routes are the decisions that either accommodate a future battery and charger or force expensive rework later.
